Our Mission to Update Maps and Household Listings of Rarotonga

Aug 2, 2023 | Latest News

In preparation for our upcoming Climate Change and Labour Force Survey 2023, the Cook Islands Statistics Office (CISO) is now on a mission to update household listings and maps for the selected Enumeration Areas (EAs) of Rarotonga. This exercise will cover 37 EAs from 11 Census Districts on the island. This endeavour that began in the Pa Enua, aims to provide accurate and up-to-date information about the Rarotonga’s population distribution and housing facilities throughout the month of August.

Due to the mobile nature of migration in our country, it is essential that this exercise is carried out before finalizing the sample for any Sample survey we conduct. This listing will ensure that all occupied private dwellings in the selected Enumerated Areas has an equal chance of selection in our sample, and the mapping will support the work of our enumerators in locating the selected households during the Survey.

Undertaking a task of this magnitude is not without its challenges. One of the main hurdles the CISO faces is that Rarotonga’s population is diverse, with residents living in a variety of housing arrangements, including traditional homes, apartments, and resorts. Ensuring that each dwelling is accounted for within the specified areas requires meticulous effort and coordination.

Yesterday, the 1st of August, we conducted our enumerators training which was well attended by 30 keen recruits. The duration of this exercise will last the whole month of August and we humbly ask for the kind support of our community to ensure that our exercise is completed in a timely manner and achieve quality results. We recognize the importance of involving residents in the process, as they possess invaluable knowledge about their neighborhoods and surroundings.

We appreciate your time and support in making this exercise a success.
